Rifles for the 5.56mm utilize a wide range of rifling twist rates, from 1 twist in 7" to 1 twist in 12". Bullets above 60 grains require faster twists to provide the best accuracy. As a general rule, bolt action rifles have a 1 in 12" twist and shoot best with bullet weights of 60 grains or less. Semi-automatic rifles produced since 1985 generally have a faster twist and can stabilize the heavier bullets but may not perform well with the lightest bullets. The 60 grain Soft Point and 60 grain V-Max are good choices for agencies or individuals who need one bullet weight to work in a variety of rifles with different twist rates. They generally work well in all twist rates from 1 in 7" to 1 in 12".
