The wild Bactrian camel is a Critically Endangered species and is a separate species from the domesticated Bactrian camel. They are adapted to living in the harsh conditions of the Gobi Desert and are the only land mammals able to survive on brackish or salty water. Only about 1400 wild Bactrian camels survive today and threats they face include hunting, habitat loss, and competition for resources with introduced livestock.
