Six Questions Your Sterling Optical Franchise Financial Model Must Answer

We built this franchise unit financial model based on deep research into the optical retail sector, focusing on high-traffic locations and onsite lab efficiencies. The model comes pre-populated with data like a $20,000 franchise fee and $1.05M in total CAPEX, but every line is fully editable to fit your specific market. With Year 1 revenue projected at $1,230,000, you can immediately test how different insurance reimbursements or frame styling volumes impact your bottom line.

When will the unit turn a profit?

Based on the data, the store reaches operational breakeven in April 2026, just four months after launch. While Year 1 EBITDA is $159,000, true net profitability scales as revenue grows toward the $2.25M mark in Year 5, though the full payback of the $1M+ investment takes longer than five years.

Maximize Store Margins

  • Increase high-margin exam fees
  • Upsell boutique frame styling
  • Optimize lab technician productivity
[dynamic_pic9]

What is the total capital requirement?

You will need approximately $1,055,000 to cover optical equipment capital expenditure and build-out. This includes $350,000 for leasehold improvements and $400,000 for specialized exam and lab equipment, plus a $172,000 cash buffer to handle the ramp-up phase.

Primary Capital Uses

  • $350,000 Leasehold Improvements
  • $220,000 Lab Equipment
  • $180,000 Exam Equipment
[dynamic_pic10]

What is the expected return on investment?

The franchise ROI calculation shows an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 1.54% and a Return on Equity (ROE) of 0.97. While the store generates strong annual EBITDA, the high initial startup costs for medical retail locations mean payback occurs after the five-year mark.

Key Investment Metrics

  • 1.54% Internal Rate of Return
  • After Year 5 Payback Period
  • $705,000 Year 5 EBITDA
[dynamic_pic11]

What is the monthly break-even point?

The unit hits its break-even point in month 4, requiring enough volume to cover $14,000 in monthly rent and a significant 14% royalty/marketing burden. Success defintely depends on maintaining high eyewear retail sales and efficient eye exam throughput from day one.

Accelerate Break-Even

  • Secure corporate vision contracts
  • Implement same-day lab service
  • Launch hyper-local digital ads
[dynamic_pic12]

What is the cash runway and lowest point?

Your lowest cash point is $172,000, projected for June 2026. This small business cash flow projection suggests you need a healthy working capital reserve to navigate the first six months while inventory and staffing costs are high but revenue is still ramping.

Protect Your Cash

  • Phase furniture and fixture buys
  • Negotiate tiered rent starts
  • Manage initial frame inventory
[dynamic_pic13]

How do different scenarios impact results?

Profitability analysis for retail optical business units shows that a High scenario-driven by better optical shop revenue stream forecasting-can significantly shorten the payback period. Conversely, a Low scenario with weak corporate contract adoption would push the lowest cash point deeper, requiring more than the planned $172,000 buffer.

Drive High-Case Outcomes

  • Use AR styling tools
  • Focus on multi-generational families
  • Maximize insurance processing efficiency

Sturdy, smaller sized supply caddy-well crafted.
Size: 5 Tiers (5.1"D x 39.2"H), Color: Rustic Brown + Classic Black
Why did you pick this product vs others?: Started out asking friends what they use for a cart - to clear stuff off their drawing boards, desks, etc. I've got an unusual amount of "things" in my workspace, and although I keep paints in a separate caddy to one side on my drafting table, the topside clutter was getting unbearable. Due to people giving me things, my interest in a few crafts, and just junk. Mainly I use the my wonderful, old, 1950s school cast-off - drafting table for painting - as it tilts and I have an edge on it. I've been wanting to also replace the top board, too. The usual caddies didn't appeal to me - the plastic ones annoy me as I can't see in the bins at what I should easily be able to reach and cannot see-though the opaque plastic. As I purged the clutter I realized I needed way less than I had and that's how I determined the size of the rolling cart. I use my spare garage and I have a lot of space, but that's the kicker - the more space you have the more things you could have, too. That's my reasoning for choosing a smaller cart. Narrow, to keep it minimal. Black metal to hide dirt. Wheels? a bonus - I'll just pull it back and forth out of its space--it's not going to be a trolley. I picked this one out of several because of price, and size, but I may come back at another time to purchase a larger one for the coat closet - mittens & hats & ski goggles & stuff.  I am going to look at the same brand, but I'm also going to choose one with sturdier wheels.  THIS CART was easy to put together, no issues at all. I didn't time myself - it took a while - under an hour is my best guess due to all the small pieces. I know it was manufactured this way to be able to fit it in as small a space-box for shipping, as possible. It was tedious, but certainly not an issue. Just lay it out the way the diagrams show you - they are perfectly done. It's sturdy enough as a supply caddy - you can't sit on the thing, or let kids romp on it but it's stiff in all the right places and the handle is perfectly placed. The top of it will hold my tablet or phone - next to my table; it's not a decor piece, but the black finish does look rather nice -with the faux wood/wood laminate top. Basket depth is well thought out, too. Coffee cans with paint brushes, some other tools, but the best part is no more clutter taking up space on top of my drafting table and I can actually use it the way it was intended!

Perfect fit

I was hesitant about ordering after reading some of the reviews, however it was exactly what I was looking for. It turned out to be a good investment, however the reviews were correct about the wobbly wheels. For the $ the wheels should have been made with better quality, which would have given the product more steadiness. Overall, a good product and it was easy to put together.

Great addition to my kitchen
Size: 5 Tiers (8.7"D x 39.2"H), Color: Rustic Brown + Classic Black
This fit my odd space between the wall and stove perfectly in height and width, I just wish it was long enough to go to the back wall. I found a tall shelf to fill the gap. The look of the cart accents my decor and will continue to match after I paint my cabinets. Assembly was straight forward and easy. Took about 10 minutes. The instructions were clear. The wheels don't like my tile for some reason so I'll have to get new ones from the hardware store, something that isn't plastic. This isn't an issue for the cart necessarily, my floor wasn't the best install. This cart works well on my other floors.

A must have in the kitchen to save counter space!
Size: 5 Tiers (8.7"D x 39.2"H), Color: Oak Beige + Classic White, Size: 5 Tiers (8.7"D x 39.2"H), Color: Oak Beige + Classic White
I absolutely love this food storage cart!! I was tired of putting all my breads, fruits, and veggies on my kitchen counter and just happened to have this sliver of space between my coffee table and the fridge. This storage cart fit perfectly and I like that you can move it around while cleaning or cooking. It fits more than you think and you can get creative with it (like removing food from packaging, using a basket, etc). It was really easy to put together. Materials are sturdy, not flimsy, and will probably last forever. It's super easy to clean and a great value for your money. This storage cart has saved my sanity in the kitchen!
