Born to a farmer and former school teacher in a small, rural Missouri town, he became a pioneer in radio and television, becoming the first television announcer and newsman for the first television station in Kansas City, Missouri. A friend and confidant to many including former President Harry Truman, he left television, for public service, where he served at the American Embassy as Press Attache in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Consul to Western Australia, in Perth, Australia. Working in Washington DC, he was a member of the White House Press Corps under President Lyndon B. Johnson, making many trips with the President including the 4-1/2 day trip around the world. Public Service eventually brought him back to Missouri as Director, Public Affairs for the Environmental Protection Agency.
