Black Tang – Zebrasoma rostratumOverview:
The Black Tang is one of the most sought-after and rare surgeonfish in the aquarium trade. Its deep jet-black body, subtle iridescent highlights, and graceful swimming make it a true showpiece fish. Known for its elegance and rarity, it brings a unique and dramatic presence to any large reef aquarium.
Origin:
Found in the central Pacific Ocean, especially around Hawaii, Line Islands, and select regions of Polynesia, where it inhabits reef slopes and lagoons.
Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous, grazing on filamentous algae throughout the day. In captivity, it thrives on a diet rich in nori, spirulina, and algae-based prepared foods, with occasional mysis or brine shrimp as supplements.
Tank Mates:
Generally peaceful with other species, but can be territorial with other tangs, especially those of the Zebrasoma genus. Best kept singly unless housed in a very large aquarium. Compatible with most reef-safe fish and invertebrates.
Aggression:
Semi-aggressive – peaceful toward most community fish but may show aggression toward similar-shaped surgeonfish.
Experience Level:
Intermediate to advanced aquarists – requires a large, stable system and proper diet to thrive.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Salinity: 1.020–1.025
- Minimum Tank Size: 180+ gallons
The Black Tang is a rare and highly prized addition for collectors and reef enthusiasts, admired for its beauty, elegance, and exclusivity.
