Flashing Scallop (Ctenoides ales)
Overview

The Flashing Scallop is a striking bivalve known for its unique, bioluminescent-like flashing display along the edges of its mantle. With a vivid, iridescent appearance and active, undulating movement, it adds both spectacle and interest to established marine aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia and surrounding tropical reefs, Ctenoides ales inhabits sandy and rubble areas near coral reefs.

Feeding

A filter feeder that requires planktonic foods, such as phytoplankton, marine snow, or finely powdered coral foods. Consistent feeding and clean water flow are essential for health and coloration.

Tank Mates

Completely reef-safe and peaceful. Compatible with non-aggressive fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Avoid predators like large wrasses, puffers, or crabs that could damage or eat the scallop.

Aggression

Peaceful. Does not harm corals or other tank inhabitants.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists due to its specialized feeding needs and sensitivity to water quality. Requires a mature tank with moderate flow and stable parameters.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 74°F – 80°F (23°C – 27°C)
  • Salinity: 1.024 – 1.026 SG
  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Unique, mesmerizing, and visually captivating, the Flashing Scallop (Ctenoides ales) is a spectacular addition to mature marine aquariums, providing both motion and a natural “light show.”

My Female GSD loves
Size: Medium (2.5"), Style: Fetch Pack 1, Size: Medium (2.5"), Style: Fetch Pack 1
Shasta is my smallest. Six in December (2025) along with her brother. She’s 100 lbs and outside, completely ball driven see last picture. Don’t let the size (2.5”) of these Chuck-It balls deter you. If your larger Breed dog has any orthopedic issues, has already torn their ACL etc, one has arthritis but wants to play. This size is perfect! Shazzy was born with several ortho issues. I don’t throw balls distance but right to her. This size and lighter weight assure even when Shazzy is spazzy w excitement, she’ll catch the ball mid air. The green balls are softer, and glow in the dark. In summer we can play well past dusk and I can see them! Her personality shows in the pictures. Playing ball is part of her. These balls are just perfect for her situation. Somehow they disappear, she loves making baskets, puts them in my tractor bucket, or my gardening bucket..then get put in burn pile, trash etc. I keep replacing them because she’d look day and night if we actually ran out!! 🙏✝️👍🏼👍🏼

Heavy chewer approved.
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
My pomsky will destroy a toy in minutes. Ropes, and the "indestructible" nylon type stuffs are no match for my furry shark. This ball has stood up to him like David. He loves the crunch and it is so much more tolerable than a squeaker. These will be a staple in his toy box - Chuckit toys are really the most durable dog toys I have found in three years.

Dogs love them
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 2)
Our dogs love these. What’s great is that you can add more plastic (like from water bottles) if the plastic starts to fall out from the center. If you have a chewer, though, these won’t last you long. Our shepherd mix loves these and then starts to pull the rubber apart the more she plays with it. Our other dogs treat it normally, though, and those ones last forever. They also get some decent height when bounced, and they make a unique whistling noise when thrown.
