Your comfort matters the most. The V-Com can be used for as little or as long as needed. Once you feel that you don’t need V-Com anymore because you have adjusted to your device’s airflow pressure and developed your tolerance, you may simply stop using it.
However, many people who have been on CPAP therapy for years find that V-Com also reduces CPAP noise, reduces leaks, or eliminates their need for a chinstrap. People who opt to continue using long-term should replace their V-Com every three months along with their CPAP mask and other CPAP supplies.
V-Com provides inspiratory comfort for people using Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP & APAP) and bi-level PAP therapy.
Where does one place the V-Com device in the positive airway pressure (PAP) circuit?
V-Com should be placed between the circuit tube (hose) and the interface (mask). The male end of the V-Com inserts into the 22 mm connector of the tube (hose) coming from the PAP device. The female end (22 mm) of the V-Com accepts the 22 mm connector on the mask or mask tubing.
What does V-Com actually do in the PAP circuit?
V-Com provides comfort without compromising therapy. V-Com attenuates or softens the peak inspiratory flow, which is often troublesome to new CPAP patients (and noninvasive ventilation patients). The highest flow rates generated by the PAP device occur during inspiration when the device generates both the exhaust flow and the patient flow (for tidal volume). Flow in a PAP circuit is turbulent, not laminar, and pressure changes by the square of the flow rate. Therefore, V-Com has its maximum comforting effect during the high inspiratory flows.
